My Garden

Gardening is fun! I didn't know how much I love gardening until I started it. Actually my husband and I started our garden right after we got married. It is a tropical garden. We started with flowers from back home: Bangladesh.

Among them were Hibiscas (Joba), Star of India (Beli), Ghanda Raj, Roses, etc. Later we got some tomatoes, and green chilis. Last summer my mother was here and she introduced bitter melon (korolla), Pui (leafy vegetable), Okra (Dherosh), etc.

Texas summer requires a lot of caring for the plants. Every morning after prayer I water the plants. I like to watch them carefully about how they are growing. It is amazing how fast they grow and bloom! Besides flowers I love the various vegetable flowers, too. They are very colorful.

I love the garden of mine! I said mine because for the time being I am the only one who takes care of it. My husband is extremely busy. He has a lot of experience in gardening so he advices me always how I can care for the plants better, and be more successful. Of course, there is another helper who loves to smell the flowers and caress them and tear them as well whenever they are within her hands reach and I am not looking; My 17 months old daughter Samiya. She loves my garden, specially to play with soil and water.

This little garden of mine helps me relax and escape from this busy life even for a short moment. Occasionally my husband and I take evening tea sitting in the garden and enjoy the plants. It also takes us back to our childhood memories in Bangladesh. We talk about how fun it was to pick flowers early in the winter mornings and have fresh vegetables and fruits to eat. All our favorite fruits don't grow here. It would have been awesome if it would. But I am happy with what we can get here now. Fresh vegetables and flowers are refreshing. and it is more nutritious, too. Next year I plan to explore with few other vegetables. Tips/suggestions anyone?
